Foley FX Soundtracks for Movies

When you shoot a movie, especially when using the on-board mike, you find that the background noise often is at the same or a higher level than the character's dialogue. For this reason we usually use a directional mike to keep the dialogue level up but this means that most "ambient" sounds are lost. Professional studios use "Foley Artists" to generate the essential ambient sounds from footsteps thru to doors opening and closing and these are added in post production to create a very realistic end product. Some Foley sounds are difficult to create especially if you need the sound of a howling werewolf as your character looks out the window.
